The Lahore High Court (LHC) instructed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold elections in Punjab within 90 days.
Justice Jawad Hassan accepted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-(PTI) Insaf’s petition and ordered the electoral authority to hold the elections within the constitutional limit.
LHC Justice Jawad Hassan announced the day’s much-anticipated ruling, ordering the ECP to hold polls within 90 days of the assembly’s dissolution and releasing the election calendar.
The PTI petitioned the high court after repeatedly requesting that the election commission in Punjab announce the poll dates. On January 14, the party dissolved the provincial assembly.
“…the ECP is directed to immediately announce the date of election of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab with the notification specifying reasons, after consultation with the Governor of Punjab, being the constitutional Head of the Province, to ensure that the elections are held not later than ninety days as required by the Constitution,” read the ruling.
