A devastating landslide amid a thunder and lightning storm near the Torkham border on the primary road through the Khyber Pass blocked the traffic.
According to initial reports, over 20 trucks were buried after the landslide, resulting in at least two fatalities and the possible entrapment of numerous individuals.
Abdul Nasir Khan, the deputy commissioner of the Khyber district, told Reuters that “twenty to twenty-five containers are buried in the wreckage.” He added that the rescue operation is ongoing, employing heavy machinery to clear the debris.
Khan reported that two Afghan citizens had lost their lives, and efforts were being made to recover their remains. Additionally, three individuals were hospitalized, and the death toll may increase.
The landslide occurred early Tuesday on the principal route linking Pakistan with the landlocked nation of Afghanistan, a crucial transit point for trade between South Asian countries and Central Asia.
