Nick Kyrgios defeated women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a heavily publicised exhibition match dubbed the “Battle of the Sexes” on Sunday. This event divided opinion across the tennis world.
The exhibition, staged in Dubai, ended with Nick Kyrgios winning 6–3, 6–3 under modified rules designed to reduce the physical advantages of the men’s game. The contest bore little resemblance to the historic 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. That match carried deep social and sporting significance.
In that landmark match, King defeated Riggs in Houston. It occurred at a time when women’s professional tennis was fighting for legitimacy, equal recognition, and fair prize money. Sunday’s event, by contrast, was widely viewed as a commercial spectacle rather than a symbolic contest.
To level the playing field, both players were limited to a single serve. Sabalenka competed on a court reduced by 9% on her side. Despite the adjustments, Kyrgios’ power and shot-making proved decisive against the four-time Grand Slam champion.
And that’s all she wrote!

Criticism followed quickly. Some observers questioned the purpose of the match. It was organised by the agency representing both players, which also generated broadcast attention and revenue. Others debated Kyrgios’ suitability for the role. They cited his past off-court controversies that have drawn criticism within the sport.
Despite limited competitive action in recent seasons, Kyrgios showed flashes of his former level. The 30-year-old has played only a handful of tour-level matches over the past three years. He currently ranks outside the top 600. Still, he managed to overcome Sabalenka, who remains one of the dominant forces in women’s tennis.
After the match, Kyrgios praised his opponent’s performance and competitiveness. He described the contest as physically demanding and admitted he felt nervous ahead of the match. This was especially true during Sabalenka’s dramatic entrance to the arena.

Sabalenka, who successfully defended her US Open title earlier this season, welcomed the challenge and expressed interest in a rematch. She said the experience helped her better understand Kyrgios’ strengths and weaknesses. She promised an even stronger showing next time.
While the exhibition succeeded in drawing global attention, it also reignited debate about how gender-based showcase matches should be framed in modern sport. For some fans, the event offered entertainment and novelty. For others, it highlighted the difficulty of recreating the meaning and impact of the original Battle of the Sexes in a very different sporting era.
