Official sources confirmed that on June 25, 2025, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police introduced advanced anti-drone technology to counter aerial terrorism threats. This cutting-edge system strengthens the province’s security framework. It allows forces to detect and neutralise hostile drones from miles away, enhancing protection for key government buildings, public figures, and major events.
Militant groups have increasingly used drones for attacks in regions like North Waziristan and southern KP. For instance, these devices have delivered explosives, posing significant risks. Therefore, the new technology addresses a critical gap in counterterrorism efforts. KP Inspector General of Police (IGP) Zulfiqar Hameed emphasised its importance. He stated that the anti-drone system will be pivotal in upcoming operations. Moreover, it complements broader efforts to equip the force with modern weapons and surveillance tools.

Hameed highlighted the police’s commitment to modernisation. He noted that the technology boosts operational readiness against complex challenges. Furthermore, this aligns with Pakistan’s response to a surge in terror incidents since the Taliban’s 2021 return in Afghanistan. The bordering provinces, including KP and Balochistan, have faced heightened risks. However, a May 2025 report from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) showed only a 5% increase in attacks, from 81 in April to 85, suggesting containment despite regional tensions with India.

The slight uptick in attacks reflects resilience in Pakistan’s counterterrorism measures. Nevertheless, the use of drones by militants demands innovative solutions. The anti-drone system positions KP police to safeguard critical infrastructure effectively. As a result, it fosters public confidence in the province’s security.
