On his first foreign visit as King, King Charles faced an awkward situation in Germany when a fan tried to give him a paper Burger King crown during his state visit.
According to People Magazine, the incident happened during the King’s ceremonial welcome by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin. The monarch politely declined to wear the fast food crown given away by the fan.
The 74-year-old King will address the German parliament on Thursday, becoming the first monarch to do so. Despite succeeding his mother, Queen Elizabeth as monarch of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth countries, King Charles is yet to be formally crowned. However, his coronation is just a few weeks away.
During his visit to Germany, King Charles affirmed Britain’s support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Furthermore, at a state banquet hosted by President Steinmeier, the monarch emphasized both countries’ commitment to protecting and advancing shared democratic values. After Brexit, the three-day visit is important to maintain strong ties between the UK and Germany.
