An outspoken critic confronted King Charles during his visit to Australia.
While the King delivered a speech in the Australian parliament, Victoria Senator Lidia Thorpe interrupted, loudly declaring, “You are not my King.” Thorpe’s protest didn’t stop there; she also demanded, “Give us that land back,” and accused the King of historical injustices, including taking “our boys, their skulls, their babies,” and called for a treaty between Australia’s First Nations and the government.
Thorpe continued her vocal protest by urging, “Give us the treaty. We want a treaty in this country. You are a death, Solomon. This is not your land. It’s not your land.”
Despite the disruption, King Charles remained composed throughout the incident. According to the magazine Hello! he appeared “unruffled”. He continued engaging with Prime Minister and Queen Camilla, hopeful not to let the incident mar the otherwise “wonderful day” they were experiencing.
