Pyongyang’s state media stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un received a Russian-made car as a gift from President Vladimir Putin, highlighting the strengthening relationship between the two nations.

Kim’s sister, Yo Jong, stated that the Russian-made car, custom-designed for Kim’s personal use, symbolizes the deep connection between the two leaders; however, the type of car and specs remain unspecified.

Following Kim’s visit to Putin, ties between North Korea and Russia have notably intensified, with Russia welcoming its first group of tourists to North Korea since the pandemic-induced closure.

Post the summit between Kim and Putin in Russia’s Far East, allegations have surfaced from the United States and South Korea regarding North Korea’s provision of arms to Russia for the conflict in Ukraine, purportedly in exchange for Russian assistance with North Korean satellite projects.

Putin is anticipated to reciprocate with a visit to Pyongyang, further cementing their bilateral relations. Kim’s preference for high-end vehicles is well-documented, with his appearances in luxury brands like Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.

A 2021 UN report uncovered an attempt to smuggle luxury vehicles worth over $1 million to North Korea, breaching UN sanctions related to Kim’s prohibited weapons initiatives. During Kim’s last visit to Russia, he was offered a ride in Putin’s Aurus Senat limousine, showcasing their close rapport. At the same time, Kim arrived in a Maybach, transported by a special train from North Korea.
