Public outrage erupted after former MMA champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was asked to leave a Frontier Airlines flight. The incident, captured and shared on social media, arose because attendants were uncomfortable with him sitting by the emergency exit.
Nurmagomedov, celebrated for his sportsmanship and humility, was the UFC Lightweight Champion from April 2018 to March 2021. He assured the attendant of his English fluency and willingness to assist, calling his removal “unfair.” Nevertheless, the attendant called it “fair” and summoned a supervisor who removed Nurmagomedov.
He travelled from Las Vegas to Los Angeles to support his teammates at UFC 311. On social media, he expressed frustration, questioning whether his removal was based on race or nationality.
An hour and a half later, he boarded another flight to his destination, maintaining his composure. He reflected on the situation online, stating, “I remained calm and respectful, as seen in the video. However, the crew could have been nicer.”
The incident sparked significant online support for Nurmagomedov, especially from the MMA community. MMA fighter Belal Muhammad humorously suggested that Nurmagomedov could have flown the plane himself. Michael Chandler criticized the crew on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing Nurmagomedov’s English skills and capability in emergencies.
Retired MMA coach John McCarthy and manager Ali Abdelaziz supported Nurmagomedov, praising his English proficiency and character. UFC commentator Laura Sanko and MMA analyst Omer Osman commended his abilities and highlighted the discrimination he faced.
Some speculated that his pro-Palestine stance influenced his removal. Comments on his post from Palestinian journalist Motaz Azaiza and Turkish actor Celal Al demanded accountability for the rude treatment. YouTuber Adam Saleh pointed to persistent Islamophobia despite it being 2025.
Many social media users argued that Nurmagomedov was exceptionally qualified to sit in the emergency exit row, condemning the discrimination he faced. Others highlighted broader safety compliance issues with airlines, with a former flight attendant suggesting racial motives behind such decisions.
A fan boycotted Frontier Airlines in solidarity with Nurmagomedov, emphasizing the event’s impact on public opinion and consumer behaviour.
