In a recent development that impacts consumers across Karachi, the Karachi Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association has decided to increase the price of milk by Rs20 per litre.
The Association’s announcement is a significant blow to consumers, as milk is already being sold in Karachi at Rs210/kg, well above the official rate of Rs180.
Shakir Umar Gujjar, a leader of the Dairy Farmers Association, made a public statement regarding the price hike.
Gujjar said the commissioner had scheduled two separate meetings to discuss milk prices. However, he pointed out that the commissioner did not attend either of these meetings.
“We informed the additional commissioner that if prices were not immediately raised, we would announce a raise ourselves,” Gujjar stated. He underscored the Association’s feeling of being left with no choice but to take matters into their own hands due to the inaction of the commissioner.
New Price Changes and the Commissioner’s Response
Gujjar announced that the price increase, decided upon in consultation with stakeholders, would go into effect from July 1. As part of this adjustment, the x-farm rate will experience a surge of Rs600 per 40kg of milk. This represents a significant increase for consumers already grappling with elevated milk prices.
In response to these developments, the Commissioner of Karachi recently ordered operations to be carried out to seal dairy shops selling milk at exorbitant prices. These measures represent an attempt by authorities to control the escalating milk prices in the city. However, it remains to be seen how effective these efforts will be in light of the Association’s decision to increase prices.
