Karachi University shifts classes online as the University of Karachi ends physical morning classes to ease student convenience during the third Ashra of Ramazan and potential transport issues linked to higher fuel prices.
According to the notification, the change takes effect from Monday, March 9 and will remain in place until the end of Ramazan. The decision was issued with the approval of Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi.
All morning classes will now be held online. Evening classes were already being conducted online before this decision.
The University of Karachi said the temporary move is aimed at reducing difficulty for students during Ramazan, especially if transport becomes a challenge.
The university added that the decision has currently been made for March, with online teaching continuing through the end of Ramazan as stated in the notification.
In a separate step tied to the fuel situation, the university also announced a reduction of petrol usage in its vehicles by up to 25%, with another notification issued on the matter.
NED University Prepares Contingency Plan
Meanwhile, NED University of Engineering and Technology said it is ready to shift classes online if needed.
Vice Chancellor Dr Tufail Ahmed said arrangements have been made and could be implemented immediately if the government issues a decision. He added that teaching at NED is currently suspended due to Ramazan, with both morning and evening classes on hold.

If classes move online, he said, students will receive assignments and take part in online discussions.
The change comes after the government sharply increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre, citing rising global oil costs and supply disruptions.
The report links the pressure to regional conflict and disruption to oil movement through the Strait of Hormuz, which has affected energy supply chains and pushed crude prices higher.
