Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Director General Mahr Sahibzad Khan announced that Karachi will experience low-intensity tremors for the next two to three days, assuring residents there’s no cause for panic.
The Karachi tremors of 2025, which included 19 mild quakes over three days, are attributed to groundwater depletion and fault lines,’ Doosra Rukh.
The tremors, ranging from 2.1 to 3.6 on the Richter scale, stem from small fault lines in Korangi and Malir, exacerbated by illegal groundwater pumping by the “tanker mafia,” Khan explained. The lack of groundwater, leaving only sand beneath hard rocks, triggers “induced earthquakes.” Sunday’s tremor was 3.6, and Tuesday’s was 2.6, showing declining intensity.
Khan predicted that the tremors would end within days, stating, “There’s nothing to worry about for the people of Karachi.” The PMD earthquake update emphasises proactive monitoring, with no high-intensity quakes anticipated. The issue of groundwater caused by the tanker mafia remains a long-term challenge.
The Karachi tremors of 2025 highlight environmental and infrastructural vulnerabilities, while the issue of the tanker mafia exacerbates groundwater problems and increases seismic risks. The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s call for calm and emphasis on the Karachi fault lines is raising public awareness and shaping discussions about safety and policy in Pakistan’s largest city.
