In Karachi’s Korangi area, a Halloween party organized within a residential zone was abruptly shut down following intervention by the Sindh Police, prompted by complaints from residents about the disturbance.
The event, held at Mehran Town, initially received approval from local authorities. However, it became the subject of community discontent due to excessive noise and the activities reported at the event.
The Halloween party featured an array of costumes deemed too revealing and frightening by some, which is typical of such celebrations but was not well-received by parts of the local community. Additionally, there were allegations of alcohol consumption and narcotics use among attendees, which further fueled the complaints to the authorities.
Upon receiving these complaints, the Korangi police took swift action by terminating the party to restore order in the area. Although the party was disbanded and attendees were dispersed, no arrests were made, a decision that has since sparked debate on social media. Questions have been raised about the enforcement of laws, particularly concerning the alleged drug use at the event.
Halloween, a festival that originated in American culture over a century ago, traditionally involves warding off spirits as per Christian beliefs. It has evolved internationally into a broader celebration characterized by costume parties held towards the end of October, attracting adults and children with festivities that include dressing up in various thematic costumes.
Moreover, the incident coincides with local celebrity Anamta Qureshi facing online scrutiny after sharing images on Instagram from her Halloween party. The posts, which showed Qureshi and her young son dressed in themed costumes and friends, drew mixed reactions from the public, highlighting the cultural sensitivities and diverse opinions on such celebrations in Pakistan.
