On New Year’s Eve, Karachi will be under Section 144, effective December 31 and January 1, prohibiting aerial firing, fireworks, and the possession of firearms.
Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, acting under powers delegated by the Sindh Home Department, announced the restrictions.
He declared, “A complete ban on the carrying and displaying of arms, aerial firing, and fireworks is in effect within Karachi Division from December 31, 2024, to January 1, 2025.”
Tragically, New Year celebrations often result in injuries or fatalities due to celebratory gunfire, despite various preventive measures by the authorities.
Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) allows district administrations to prohibit activities temporarily. Police enforce these bans and prosecute violations.
This year’s ban follows a request from the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, South Zone, prompted by traffic disruptions and safety concerns. The DIG noted that young people converging on the Seaview area in vehicles contribute to these issues.
“The observance of past New Year’s Eves has shown that aerial firing can lead to serious incidents or fatalities,” stated the official.
Therefore, he advocated for the ban to protect citizens’ lives.
Additionally, the Sindh Police have prepared a security plan to counteract aerial firing and ensure public safety during the festivities.
