In a legal development, a Michigan federal judge has dismissed a $400 million lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs, brought by Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith, a male prisoner who alleged sexual assault by the music mogul. The lawsuit, which also drew attention due to potential involvement from Jennifer Lopez, was dismissed on Wednesday.

Cardello-Smith accused Diddy of assaulting him in 1997 at a Holiday Inn in Detroit. However, the court ruled the lawsuit invalid due to the statute of limitations, which allowed only three years for such claims at the time of the alleged incident. Since the lawsuit was filed in 2024, it was well beyond the allowable period for seeking legal recourse.

Adding complexity to the case, Cardello-Smith had hoped to call Jennifer Lopez as a witness, claiming she had crucial information about the incident from dating Diddy years later. This move added intrigue and influenced the judge’s decision to dismiss the case.

Diddy’s legal team successfully argued that the lawsuit was part of a pattern of unfounded and harassing claims directed at him. They highlighted inconsistencies in Cardello-Smith’s accounts, noting that he had filed similar lawsuits in two different courts, each alleging the assault occurred in different counties on the same day.

While dismissing the case, the judge declined Diddy’s request to impose sanctions on Cardello-Smith but issued a stern warning against filing frivolous lawsuits in the future. The court also noted Cardello-Smith’s criminal history, which includes convictions for sexual assault and kidnapping.

Diddy’s dismissal of this lawsuit marks a significant relief amid his ongoing legal challenges. His legal team remains vigilant, aiming to prevent future lawsuits from Cardello-Smith.
