Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the unforgettable Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series catapulted him into a new level of fame and prosperity. Yet, his relationship with Disney was severed following allegations of abuse during his marriage made by his former wife.
Despite Depp’s legal triumph over Amber Heard, an event many perceived as a blow to the #MeToo movement, his career recovery and substantial lawsuit victory led to conjecture about his potential return to the pirate saga. But it seems fans shouldn’t keep their hopes up.
As per Daily Mail, Johnny Depp has firmly decided to “never collaborate with Disney again,” following his experience during the Amber Heard scandal. He is resolute in his decision not to reprise his iconic role as Jack Sparrow, even if it means forfeiting a whopping $20 million for a proposed sixth film.
This aligns with Depp’s earlier statement during the trial that his partnership with Disney had definitively concluded. Despite Depp’s apparent disinterest in reprising his beloved pirate role, the film’s producers would be delighted to see his return.
Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer behind the “Pirates” films, voiced his aspiration for Depp’s return but conceded that the final decision rests with Disney. In a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bruckheimer stated, “That’s something you’d need to ask Disney. I can’t answer that question. I’d love for him to be in the film. He’s a friend and an outstanding actor, and it’s unfortunate how personal lives become entangled in everything we do.”
While Bruckheimer remains hopeful for Depp’s participation, his wishes may be in vain if Depp persists in his resentment against Disney and turns down a substantial remuneration. Given the public portrayal of Depp as an abuser and the subsequent vindication in court against Heard, it’s not surprising that Depp harbors resentment. The process of repairing the reputation damage from such allegations is undeniably challenging.
Disney may soon face the harsh truth that a new “Pirates” film without Depp’s contribution will unlikely draw in audiences. After all, Captain Sparrow has been the franchise’s very heartbeat.
