On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced the revocation of former President Joe Biden’s security clearance, effectively ending his access to daily intelligence briefings.
Trump announced on Truth Social and X, saying, “There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information.”
Trump emphasized, “Therefore, we are immediately revoking Joe Biden’s Security Clearances and stopping his daily Intelligence Briefings.” He further punctuated his decision with a direct reference to his time as a reality TV host, exclaiming, “JOE, YOU’RE FIRED.”
It is a longstanding tradition for US presidents to receive intelligence briefings after their tenure. However, Trump justified his decision by pointing out that Biden had previously removed his security clearance upon winning the 2020 election. Trump attributed this action to what he described as Biden’s “erratic behaviour,” which notably included concerns following the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
Trump raised doubts about Biden’s reliability with sensitive information, citing a special counsel report allegedly highlighting Biden’s “poor memory.” This report surfaced after classified documents were discovered at Biden’s residence.
The move comes amid scrutiny of both political figures handling of classified documents. While Trump was also prosecuted for similar issues, the Justice Department dropped the case after winning the 2024 election.
This development marks a significant shift in the usual courtesy extended to former presidents, reflecting ongoing political tensions and raising questions about the criteria and implications of access to national security intelligence post-presidency.
