Jim Carrey, renowned for his role in the 1994 hit film ‘The Mask,’ has expressed interest in revisiting his iconic character, albeit with a specific condition.
Over three decades since the movie’s release, which also starred Cameron Diaz and became a worldwide sensation with earnings of $351.5 million, Carrey is open to a sequel given the right creative circumstances.
“The key is the right idea,” Carrey remarked during an interview with comicbook.com. “It’s not about the money for me—I often joke about it, but what truly matters is the quality of the script and the team behind it,” he explained.
Despite his comments in the past about retiring from acting, Carrey admits that a compelling project could change his mind. “I’ve talked about retiring, but it’s more like power-resting. A great concept or a wonderful team can reignite my passion for acting,” he added.
Discussions of a sequel to ‘The Mask’ have emerged periodically over the last two decades. An earlier attempt to continue the storyline with ‘Son of the Mask’ in 2005, which did not include Carrey and starred Jamie Kennedy, was poorly received. The film flopped critically and commercially, earning a paltry six per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing only $59.9 million on an $84 million budget.
The failure of ‘Son of the Mask’ demonstrated the challenges of reviving the franchise without Carrey’s involvement. However, with Hollywood’s recent trend of revisiting classic films—such as ‘Indiana Jones,’ ‘Terminator,’ and ‘Top Gun’—the potential for a new ‘The Mask’ film remains a possibility.
Carrey’s Return to Acting
After announcing a potential retirement in 2022, Carrey has made a notable return to the big screen. He will reprise his role as the villainous Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming release of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3.’ Carrey delivered a humorous response when asked about his return to acting despite previous statements about stepping back. “I get to play a genius, which is quite a stretch for me,” he joked. “Plus, I’ve made some big purchases lately, and frankly, I need the paycheck.”
In addition to Sonic, Carrey will appear in David Robert Mitchell’s upcoming film, Evergreen Pines and the Fading Summer, which promises more intriguing performances from the veteran actor.
