Prominent screenwriter and producer Jemima Khan voiced her views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through social media. Delving into the intricate issue, she critiqued both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas.
Highlighting past instances, Khan underscored Netanyahu’s apparent support for Hamas. She referenced a 2019 statement where Netanyahu allegedly expressed, “Those wanting to prevent a Palestinian state should bolster Hamas and facilitate its funding.” Further, Khan brought to light remarks by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in 2019. Barak’s comments hinted at Netanyahu’s strategy to sustain Hamas, even if it compromised the security of Israeli citizens, particularly in the southern areas. Moreover, Khan cited Yuval Diskin, ex-chief of Shin Bet, who in 2013 asserted that Netanyahu had been fortifying Hamas throughout his term.
Gaza Strip: Recent Escalations
The Gaza Strip, especially its densely populated refugee camp, faced severe Israeli airstrikes recently. This has tragically resulted in the death of over 8,500 Palestinians, predominantly women and children. This escalation followed the October 7 Hamas assault on southern Israel. As a response, the Israeli military ramped up its actions in Gaza. Such intensified operations, particularly on Tuesday, also resulted in 11 Israeli soldiers’ deaths, marking it as the most significant military fatality since the October onslaught.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) proclaimed their airstrikes targeted and killed Ibrahim Biari, a central Hamas figure, in Jabalia, Gaza’s most extensive refugee camp. However, Hamas’s spokesperson, Hazem Qassem, denied any senior leader’s presence in the camp. He labelled the IDF’s assertions as a facade to legitimize civilian deaths. Palestinian health reports corroborate the grim scenario in Jabalia, outlining the extensive death and injury toll.
Jemima Khan’s statements resonate with her unwavering commitment to a peaceful resolution between Israel and Palestine. Her insights on Netanyahu and Hamas’s roles in the conflict not only instigate thoughtful dialogues but also emphasize the dire necessity to tackle the root issues, pushing for a peaceful existence in the region.
