The newly-appointed head coach of the Pakistan Men’s Test team, Jason Gillespie, stated that he would not impose Australia’s style of play on the team. Instead, he encourages playing in a manner that suits the players’ strengths.
During a discussion on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) podcast, Gillespie addressed questions about whether he would introduce Australia’s aggressive cricketing style to the Pakistan team. He emphasized his unique coaching philosophy. “I simply want the Pakistan cricket team to play the style of cricket that’s going to suit them,” he said. According to him, authenticity in their approach is key.
Gillespie advocated for a balanced approach to the game. He highlighted the importance of playing positively and entertainingly, yet also recognizing when to adopt a more measured strategy. “There are going to be times when you have to grind it out, and that’s what Test cricket is about,” he noted.
His first series as head coach will be at home against Bangladesh in August, followed by series against England and South Africa later in the year.
Pakistan is currently fifth in the World Test Championship standings. Gillespie acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained optimistic. “The ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025 for Pakistan is going to be a challenge; there’s no question about that,” he admitted. His strategy is to take each series and match as it comes, focusing on thorough preparation and strong performance as the keys to success.
