James Cameron opens up about directing Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft concert film. He also discusses their creative partnership ahead of its March release.
James Cameron has spoken warmly about his experience working with Billie Eilish on her upcoming Hit Me Hard and Soft concert film. He described the collaboration as both unexpected and creatively rewarding.
The acclaimed filmmaker shared his thoughts during an appearance on Awards Chatter. In that interview, he reflected on his long career and discussed the new project. Cameron explained that the opportunity emerged naturally while he was immersed in other major commitments. For example, he was then working on the expanding Avatar series.
According to Cameron, the idea came together quickly. He said the project appeared suddenly but felt like a natural fit once conversations began. While filming Eilish’s global Hit Me Hard and Soft tour, which ran from September 2024 to November 2025, he also built a strong rapport with her family.
Cameron highlighted his connection with Billie’s mother, Maggie Baird, noting their shared commitment to sustainability and plant-based living. He explained that these common values extended beyond casual conversation and led to professional collaboration. Baird is now an executive producer on a sequel to The Game Changers, a documentary about plant-based athletes.
That relationship sparked a creative leap. Cameron recalled suggesting that Eilish’s tour be filmed in 3D, an idea that quickly gained momentum. He said Eilish responded enthusiastically. Ultimately, she joined him as a co-director, given her central role in designing and shaping the live show.
The director praised Eilish’s artistry and vision. He called the concert experience visually striking and emotionally powerful. He said the scale and design of the show made it ideal for an immersive cinematic treatment. Cameron also described the collaboration as enjoyable and energising.
The Hit Me Hard and Soft concert film is scheduled for release on March 20. It offers fans a visually rich, large-format look at one of the most talked-about tours of recent years.
