Speculation about veteran politician Jahangir Tareen’s potential return to politics with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) gained traction after a viral video.
A viral video featuring Jahangir Tareen alongside PPP South Punjab President Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood has sparked rumours about his potential political comeback. Tareen stated, “If I return to politics, I would align myself with the PPP.” There are unconfirmed reports of a meeting with PPP co-chairman President Asif Zardari on June 25; however, senior PPP leader Khawaja Rizwan Alam dismissed this possibility, citing Zardari’s parliamentary commitments. A source close to Tareen clarified that the meeting was related to business and denied affiliation with the PPP.

Tareen, a prominent businessman, started his career under Pervez Musharraf with the Pakistan Muslim League–Quaid (PML-Q) before joining the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2012. As a key ally of Imran Khan, he played a significant role in securing a majority for PTI in the 2018 elections by rallying independent candidates, despite facing disqualification. However, Tareen was sidelined after some disputes and led a no-confidence motion against Khan. He later formed the Independent Political Party (IPP) but quit politics after experiencing losses in the 2024 elections in Multan and Lodhran.
Tareen’s possible move to the PPP, with unverified claims about political motives, requires caution. The rumours underscore the dynamic nature of Pakistan’s political landscape.
