Israeli gunfire and airstrikes killed at least 60 Palestinians, many near a US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid site in central Gaza, according to local health officials. The incident, part of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, has drawn UN condemnation and intensified global scrutiny.
Medical officials at Shifa and Al-Quds hospitals reported 25 deaths and dozens injured near the Netzarim Corridor aid distribution centre before dawn. The Israeli military claimed it fired warning shots at “suspects” posing a threat, despite designating the area an active combat zone. Health authorities at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis also reported 14 deaths near a Rafah GHF site, highlighting the dangers civilians face accessing aid.
The Gaza Health Ministry states that 163 Palestinians have been killed and over 1,000 injured while seeking aid since GHF operations began in late May 2025.
In Gaza, the choice is either going hungry or getting killed while trying to get food at one of the aid distribution sites. That is according to Tarek al Farra who has been displaced and is currently in the South of the strip.

The GHF, which distributed 2.5 million meals on June 11, denied knowledge of civilian casualties but accused Hamas of killing five aid workers in a bus attack. The foundation emphasised collaboration with Israeli authorities to secure safe routes, stating, “More aid is the solution to reduce urgency.” Hamas-run health officials, however, blame Israeli forces for the deaths, escalating mutual accusations.
UN Condemnation and Humanitarian Crisis
The United Nations has condemned the killings, refusing to partner with GHF due to its use of private contractors and Israeli military backup, which violates humanitarian principles of neutrality and impartiality. Gaza’s 2.1 million residents face catastrophic hunger after an 11-week Israeli blockade, partially eased in May 2025. The UN estimates 500 daily aid trucks are needed, far exceeding current deliveries.

The conflict, reignited by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack that killed 1,200 and took 251 hostages, has led to nearly 55,000 Palestinian deaths, mostly civilians, per Gaza’s Health Ministry. Israel’s campaign, aimed at dismantling Hamas, has displaced most of Gaza’s population and caused widespread malnutrition. Recent aid site shootings, with over 80 deaths reported in a week, underscore the volatile environment.
