Following the directives from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the federal government has removed Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan and Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon from their respective posts. This decision marks a significant shift in the administration of the capital city.
Despite the ECP’s orders issued on October 26, conveyed to the Secretary Establishment Division, the government initially delayed the implementation of the removal of both officials.
In a letter to the Establishment Division, the Election Commission had explicitly directed the removal of the IG and the deputy commissioner. Still, the federal government did not immediately act on these instructions. However, recent developments show progress, with the Ministry of Interior instructing the Establishment Division to proceed with the changes.
Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, a grade 20 officer, was appointed as the police chief of Islamabad by the Shehbaz Sharif government on May 21, 2022, transitioning from his role in the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA).
In October of the previous year, Dr. Khan was at the centre of a corruption scandal. The Anti-Corruption Establishment Punjab (ACE Punjab) registered a case against him, alleging document tampering in awarding contracts and accusing him of causing a Rs30.5 million loss to the government. Despite multiple ACE Punjab summons, the IG Islamabad did not respond to the notices, further intensifying the controversy.
