The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has implemented new regulations to address the issue of foreign cricketers withdrawing from the league after being drafted.
According to reports, these measures ensure that players participating in the drafting process commit to completing the season, barring valid reasons for their departure.
Under the new rules, any foreign player who opts out of the league without a legitimate cause after being selected in the auction risks a two-year ban from the IPL. This stringent policy has been established to safeguard the interests of the franchises, which have previously expressed concerns about the financial and operational disruptions caused by players abruptly leaving the league.
Officials have clarified that the only exceptions to this rule will be for injuries or medical conditions, which the player’s home cricket board must confirm. This amendment to the IPL’s regulations reflects a concerted effort to maintain the league’s integrity and continuity, ensuring that all participating franchises can rely on the availability of the players they invest in during the auction.
