On Monday, at the Wankhede Stadium, the 21st match of the IPL 2025 saw Royal Challengers Bangalore secure a thrilling 12-run victory over the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians.
Despite retiring hurt in the previous game, Tilak Varma returned strong, smashing a half-century in just 26 balls and partnering with skipper Hardik Pandya to add 89 runs for the fifth wicket. Their valiant effort, however, was not enough to carry Mumbai Indians to victory.
Varma’s impressive 56 off 29 balls and Pandya’s explosive 42 off 15 balls brought Mumbai from needing 132 off 56 balls down to 41 off 18. However, RCB’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood stepped up in the death overs, taking crucial wickets to end Mumbai’s sensational comeback.

Mumbai needed 28 runs from 12 balls in the game’s final moments. Krunal Pandya of RCB delivered a remarkable performance, claiming three wickets in the last over, including Mitchell Santner and Deepak Chahar on successive balls. Although Naman Dhir struck a four, bringing the requirement down to 12 off two balls, Krunal’s fifth-ball dismissal of Dhir sealed a memorable victory for RCB.
Krunal finished with figures 4-45, while Yash Dayal and Hazlewood contributed significantly with 2-46 and 2-37, respectively. Their efforts helped restrict Mumbai Indians to 209/9 despite strong starts from the RCB batsmen. Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar’s quickfire half-centuries earlier had propelled RCB to post a formidable 221/5, securing their first win at the Wankhede Stadium since 2015 and ending a 10-year drought.

Mumbai faced difficulties from the start as top-order batsmen Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton fell early to Dayal and Hazlewood. While Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav tried to stabilize the innings, they struggled to maintain the required pace against RCB’s tight bowling.
This match showcased exceptional performances and strategic gameplay and highlighted the unpredictable nature of cricket, where moments of brilliance can turn the tide in crucial phases. With this win, RCB has reignited their campaign, while Mumbai Indians will look to regroup and come back stronger in their upcoming fixtures.
