Asif Merchant, a Pakistani citizen arrested in connection with a planned political assassination in the U.S., is currently under intense scrutiny by multiple investigative agencies.
The investigation involves local authorities and national entities such as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).
With its Intelligence Bureau Management System (IBMS), the FIA meticulously analyses Merchant’s travel history to the U.S., Iran, and Iraq. The focus is establishing his travel patterns, including specific dates and routes, to uncover any direct journeys from Karachi to the U.S. and back.
Despite Merchant’s extensive travels, CTD sources confirm that Merchant has no criminal record in Karachi or other parts of Pakistan. Notably, he is registered as an active income tax filer with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and seems unaffiliated with any political organizations. Merchant holds a master’s degree from a private university, adding another layer of complexity to his profile.
Initial findings by Pakistani authorities have crafted a detailed picture of Merchant’s personal and professional life. His assets include two residences in Karachi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Jafar Tayyar Society. He earned his master’s in Management Systems from the Newport Institute in Karachi and entered the banking sector in 2002.
Significantly, Merchant’s travel log indicates multiple trips to Iran using three different passports between November 2, 2017, and April 8, 2024. His trips include extended stays in Iran, followed by travels to the U.S., suggesting a pattern that has drawn the attention of national security. After several international movements, Merchant allegedly made a recent trip to the U.S. via Turkey on April 11, 2024.
