Instagram recently unveiled a new feature that allows users to download and disseminate Reels from other users beyond the confines of the app.
The company’s head, Adam Mosseri, disclosed this update via his Instagram broadcast channel. Initially, the feature will be extended to US-based users, enabling them to save Reels straight to their camera roll. This can be done by tapping the share icon and choosing the Download option.
Nonetheless, it should be stressed that only Reels from public accounts can be downloaded. Furthermore, those with public accounts can turn off the downloading feature for their Reels if they want to limit distribution.
Although Mosseri didn’t specifically address whether the downloaded Reels would bear a watermark, his photo implies that an Instagram logo and account name will appear on the downloaded videos.
This move mirrors TikTok’s practice of incorporating watermarks on downloaded videos. However, Instagram has traditionally permitted users to download their Reels from drafts without a watermark.
In a significant move in 2021, Instagram stopped promoting content carrying a TikTok watermark or any other video watermark. This shift underscores Instagram’s dedication to providing a fluid user experience and elevating original content on its platform.
