Senior anchorperson and analyst Muhammad Malik discussed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political manoeuvres.
On the Geo News program “Naya Pakistan”, Malik praised Khan for his strategic insight, particularly highlighting his decision to involve Mahmood Achakzai in key negotiations.
According to Malik, Achakzai’s extensive political connections uniquely position him within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to facilitate dialogues with major political leaders like Asif Ali Zardari, Nawaz Sharif, and Shahbaz Sharif, which other members of the party could not accomplish.
Malik noted that Achakzai’s longstanding relationships with these leaders require a level of respect that must be maintained. Khan’s decision to engage him in negotiations reflects a strategic shift towards more diplomatic political dealings. He suggested that success in these negotiations would be considered a strategic victory for Imran Khan. At the same time, any failure could still be portrayed as a personal success for Achakzai, creating a win-win scenario for Khan.
Furthermore, Malik commented on the current budget challenges, observing that Imran Khan had predicted a stringent budget, which has come to fruition. This period, he noted, presents an excellent opportunity for the People’s Party to negotiate favourable terms. He criticized the government’s assumption that the People’s Party would automatically support all aspects of the budget, a miscalculation that has now increased political pressure.
In conclusion, Malik questioned the potential for serious unrest due to the budget but downplayed such prospects. He also mentioned the Finance Minister’s clarification about the gradual increase of the petroleum levy, which seeks to mitigate immediate financial impacts on the public.
