Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, is among 60 individuals sentenced by a military court for involvement in the May 9 riots. The announcement was made on Thursday by the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The Field General Court Martial (FGCM) handed down sentences after completing legal proceedings. The ISPR stated,

“The FGCM promulgated punishments to the remaining 60 culprits after examining all evidence, ensuring the provision of all legal rights, and completing due process.”\

The ISPR emphasized that the trials had concluded for all individuals under military custody connected to the riots. It reiterated that all convicted individuals retain their right to appeal and access other legal remedies as guaranteed by the Constitution and the law.

On December 21, military courts sentenced 25 civilians to rigorous imprisonment ranging from two to ten years for their roles in attacking military facilities in 2023. The US, UK, and EU raised concerns over these civilian trials, claiming they violated international law.

In response, the Foreign Office (FO) defended the sentences, stating they were issued under laws enacted by parliament and upheld by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch added,

“Pakistan remains fully committed to fulfilling its international human rights obligations.”

Call for Accountability

Speaking to Geo News, Brigadier (Retd.) Waqar Hassan urged authorities to bring the masterminds of the riots to justice. He alleged that instructions for targeting military installations came from abroad, including the US and UK.

“Some individuals fell victim to political schemes. It’s crucial to apprehend those orchestrating these events,” he stated.
