The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) questioned PTI leader Imran Khan at Attock Jail concerning a missing diplomatic cable, reportedly under his care.
While there were media claims that the FIA formally charged the PTI leader in this cipher case, it could not confirm this independently. On July 25, Mr. Khan met with a joint investigative team to discuss the cipher matter.
The release of an alleged copy of the confidential cable by the US-based media, The Intercept, has intensified the scrutiny of Mr. Khan. Many from the departing administration have insinuated that he might be the source of the leak.
This revelation came shortly after Imran Khan’s incarceration related to corruption allegations in the Toshakhana case.
Insiders note that the case against the former Prime Minister is still in development. Former interior minister Rana Sanaullah stated that if Mr. Khan had misplaced the provided cipher copy, it would breach the Official Secrets Act.
Originally, FIA focused on Mr. Khan for potentially disclosing and retaining confidential diplomatic information. Yet, following former principal secretary Azam Khan’s claim that the cipher disappeared while in Imran Khan’s custody, the agency has expanded its investigation. According to records, Azam Khan entrusted the cipher to the former Prime Minister, who later admitted to misplacing it and did not return it despite several reminders.
