Imran Khan, founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was arrested in seven new cases related to recent party protests.
The former prime minister appeared before an anti-terrorism court judge at Adiala Jail, where he has been held for months. This was after completing a six-day physical remand in a separate case linked to PTI’s September 28 protest in Rawalpindi.
The prosecution did not request an extension for his physical remand. A case filed at the New Town police station accuses Khan of inciting the demonstration, which led to violent incidents in Rawalpindi.
During the hearing, the Pindi police arrested Khan about new cases, including those connected to PTI’s protests on October 5 and November 24. Additionally, there is a case related to the Rawalpindi demonstration.
Despite the arrests, the prosecution did not seek physical custody of Khan in the new cases either.
As a result, ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah sent Khan on judicial remand for all the cases, including the new ones.
The charges against Khan stem from protests he called for, which resulted in violent incidents.
It is important to note that three Rangers personnel and two police officers were martyred during PTI protesters. PTI claims that at least 20 of its members also lost their lives.
The protest ended abruptly when authorities started a late-night crackdown on party workers and leaders at Islamabad’s D-Chowk.
Law enforcement arrested over 1,000 PTI workers, including more than three dozen Afghan nationals. They also recovered tear gas and other ammunition.
