The iconic and trailblazing artist Tina Turner, who rose from challenging beginnings and an abusive marriage to become one of the world’s top recording artists, passed away on Wednesday at 83.
Turner’s representative announced her peaceful passing in her Swiss home in Küsnacht near Zurich after a prolonged illness.
Launching her career in the 1950s during the birth of rock and roll, Turner evolved into an MTV sensation and an emblem of 1980s style. Her chart-topping song “What’s Love Got to Do with It” showcased Turner as the epitome of the era, featuring her signature spiky blond hair and edgy fashion.
Turner’s inclination for musical innovation and straightforward ballads complemented the 1980s pop scene, dominated by electronic sounds and a departure from hippie-era idealism. The artist, often called the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, clinched six of her eight Grammy Awards in this decade, charting a dozen songs on the Top 40. In addition, her 1988 concert in Rio de Janeiro witnessed a staggering audience of 180,000 attendees, establishing a record for a single performer’s concert.
Tina Turner’s resilience was evident in her life’s journey, including her candidness about the domestic abuse she endured during her marriage and musical collaboration with Ike Turner in the 1960s and 1970s. Yet, despite the tribulations, Turner’s narrative is one of triumph rather than victimhood, as she transformed into a global sensation.
Born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, in the rural community of Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner’s journey to fame was far from easy. Yet, despite a tumultuous upbringing, she found her voice and was discovered at a club show by Ike Turner in 1957. Her powerful vocals and meticulous dance routines propelled her into the limelight as the Ike and Tina Turner Revue lead vocalist.
After separating from Ike Turner, she experienced years of hardship before regaining prominence. Through this period, her indomitable spirit and partnership with Australian music executive Roger Davies led her back to chart-topping success with her album Private Dancer in 1984.
Afterward, Tina Turner found love with German music executive Erwin Bach and started a new chapter of her life in Europe. Following a successful world tour in 2008 and 2009, Turner retired from the music industry, married Bach, and became a Swiss citizen.
Tina Turner’s legacy continues to influence and inspire generations. Her biographical musical, “TINA: The Tina Turner Musical,” has achieved critical acclaim in London’s West End and Broadway, and an HBO documentary about her life was released in 2021. She leaves behind her husband, Bach and two adopted sons.
