Sony Pictures will release the much-anticipated sequel to “I Know What You Did Last Summer” on July 18, 2025, reviving the slasher franchise’s chilling atmosphere nearly three decades after the original film was released in 1997.
Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, this contemporary adaptation combines familiar characters with new ones, delving into themes of trauma, guilt, and secrets in the digital age. Original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. return to their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, confronting a hook-wielding killer once again.
The story follows a new group of friends in Southport who trigger a deadly chain of events after a fatal accident. The infamous killer returns with unfinished business, blending classic slasher elements with contemporary twists, including the role of social media in exposing secrets. Producers emphasise enduring consequences of past actions, as a source told Page Six: “The film explores themes of trauma, guilt, and the enduring consequences of secrets.” This update aims to resonate with both longtime fans and younger audiences in a tech-driven world.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer is a capable legacy sequel with some charms, but its plot is so close to the first film in the series that it barely has any room to breathe.

Hewitt and Prinze Jr. anchor the film as survivors haunted by their past. New additions include:
- Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks)
- Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies)
- Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid)
- Tyriq Withers (Tell Me Lies)
- Sarah Pidgeon (Tiny Beautiful Things)
Supporting roles are featured by Billy Campbell, Gabrielle Bechtel, and Austin Nichols. This ensemble injects fresh energy while honouring the original’s legacy.
Neal H. Moritz, producer of the 1997 film, returns alongside co-writers Robinson and Sam Lansky (based on Leah McKendrick’s story). Filming occurred in New South Wales and Los Angeles from late 2024 to early 2025, with the fictional Southport setting evoking eerie coastal vibes. The R rating ensures intense horror, including “bloody horror violence” and strong language.
