Hunter Biden, the son of U.S. President Joe Biden, has reportedly reached a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney for Delaware.
The U.S. media reported the agreement pertains to his pleading guilty to two federal misdemeanor counts for failing to pay his taxes on time.
Under the agreement, Biden will also likely receive probation for his tax violations. A gun possession charge he currently faces is expected to be dismissed, contingent on meeting specific conditions. Legal professionals have suggested that Biden is unlikely to face imprisonment over these charges.
U.S. Attorney David Weiss, initially appointed by former president Donald Trump in 2018, signifies the conclusion of a five-year investigation into Hunter Biden’s actions. The Biden administration has opted to retain Weiss to prevent a president-appointed U.S. attorney from presiding over the criminal case involving the president’s son.
Hunter Biden’s Plea Agreement
Chris Clark, Hunter Biden’s attorney, has disclosed that his client has reached two agreements with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware, concluding the lengthy investigation into his behavior.
As per the agreements, Hunter Biden will plead guilty to two counts of misdemeanor failure to file tax payments promptly. Furthermore, he faces a firearm charge not included in the plea agreement and is subject to a pretrial diversion agreement.
Clark released a statement asserting that Hunter Biden acknowledges the importance of taking responsibility for his mistakes during personal strife and addiction. He is committed to his ongoing recovery and moving forward.
The plea agreement suggests that the prosecutors did not find sufficient cause to press charges related to Hunter Biden’s dealings with foreign entities or any other misconduct.
The agreement is limited to two instances of misdemeanor failure to file tax payments when due and a firearm charge that will be addressed in a pretrial diversion agreement. The felony gun possession charge will be dropped, provided Hunter Biden meets certain stipulations, such as avoiding criminal activity within a specific time frame.
Hunter Biden addressed the unpaid taxes from 2017 and 2018, the years specified in the charges. An arraignment date is expected to be scheduled by a judge in the upcoming weeks. During this time, Hunter Biden is anticipated to surrender to Delaware authorities and be processed by U.S. Marshals.
