On August 6, 2025, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab dismissed claims of faulty construction in the new Hub Canal project, labelling viral social media videos as “propaganda.”
While speaking to reporters, he emphasised, “We wouldn’t inaugurate the canal, scheduled for August 13, if the propaganda had been accurate.” The mayor highlighted the Pakistan People’s Party’s efforts to provide additional water to Karachi after 22 years, successfully completing the multi-billion-rupee project in a record time of 10 months.

The Hub Canal project aims to improve Karachi’s water supply by rehabilitating existing infrastructure and constructing a new canal with a capacity of 100 million gallons per day (MGD) sourced from the Hub Dam. Wahab acknowledged two unspecified issues that arose during construction, stating that they were promptly addressed to ensure the project’s success. This initiative is a crucial step toward tackling Karachi’s chronic water shortages and enhancing access for millions of residents.
Wahab noted that Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori pledged Rs100 billion for the project, with Rs40 billion already received. He urged the governor to transfer these funds to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) account to support ongoing efforts. The collaboration underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, though the mayor’s call for fund transfer highlights potential administrative hurdles.

The viral videos alleging construction flaws have sparked public debate, with some questioning the project’s quality. Wahab’s rejection of these claims aims to restore confidence ahead of the canal’s inauguration. The project’s success could bolster the People’s Party’s reputation in Sindh, while addressing water scarcity remains a priority for Karachi’s administration.
