In the wake of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Narendra Modi secured a majority for a third term, there has been heightened public interest in the compensation packages of Indian Members of Parliament (MPs).
Each MP in India receives a base salary of INR 100,000 per month. They are also entitled to a daily allowance of INR 2,000. Beyond these basic compensations, MPs receive several additional allowances to support their duties:
- Constituency Allowance: MPs are provided INR 70,000 monthly for travel and related expenses within their constituency.
- Office Expense Allowance: This includes INR 60,000 monthly, of which INR 20,000 is allocated specifically for stationery supplies.
Accommodation benefits are substantial:
- MPs enjoy free housing in Delhi with provisions for internet connectivity and a significant annual allowance of 150,000 free telephone calls.
- They also receive free residential facilities in their respective constituencies.
Utilities are also part of the compensation package:
- Annually, MPs receive 50,000 units of electricity and 4,000 litres of water free of charge.
Travel benefits extend to air and rail:
- MPs and their spouses are entitled to 34 free air travel tickets annually.
- They can also travel in first-class AC coaches on trains without charge.
Considering all these benefits, the total monthly compensation for an Indian MP can amount to approximately INR 230,000, enabling MPs to perform their legislative and constituency duties effectively.
