Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets at Israel, escalating Middle East tensions following the assassination of Hamas’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran.
Hezbollah’s action was in retaliation to Israeli strikes in Lebanon and the killing of a senior Hezbollah military commander in Beirut. Despite the significant escalation, reports indicate no casualties from Hezbollah’s attack.
In response to heightened regional tensions, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed hope that Iran would de-escalate the situation despite threats of further actions against Israel. Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon has urged American citizens to leave Lebanon using any available commercial transport amidst fears of a broader conflict.
Similarly, the UK government advised its nationals to depart Lebanon immediately due to the unpredictable security environment, emphasizing the urgency of leaving while commercial travel options are still available.
The Foreign Office is increasing support for British nationals in Lebanon by deploying additional consular staff and military personnel to assist in the evacuation efforts.
