Senior journalist and analyst Kashif Abbasi’s program on ARY News, “Off the Record,” was unexpectedly suspended on Monday during his critical analysis of a press conference held by the DG ISPR.
During the show, Abbasi scrutinized the military spokesperson’s comments on various political topics, including the events of May 9, freedom of expression, and the February 8 elections, without specifically mentioning the PTI.
Abbasi observed that the discussion on the May 9 incidents appeared premeditated, as highlighted by specific footage shown during the mention of the date. He stated that the state has taken a definitive stance on the violence of that day, treating those involved according to the law. He criticized unwarranted intrusions into homes, advocating that such actions are inappropriate, regardless of the circumstances.
The analyst underscored the importance of the state acting without vengeance and focusing on delivering justice. He raised concerns about the potential for innocent individuals being caught in the sweep of arrests related to the May 9 events. Abbasi questioned the validity of multiple charges against figures like Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who was allegedly present in several cities simultaneously, per various FIRs.
In concluding his analysis, Abbasi called for depoliticising the May 9 incidents. He stressed the necessity for justice and impartiality, especially in a climate of heightened political tension. Reflecting on the pervasive distrust in electoral transparency cited by political parties, Abbasi pointed to a deeper systemic issue, suggesting a uniform direction in the accusations made by politicians regarding electoral integrity.
