Speculation surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) continues to evolve, with new rumors focusing on its online component. A seasoned gaming industry professional has hinted that GTA 6 Online could incorporate features inspired by Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs).
Rich Vogel, a developer with credits on major titles like Ultima Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic, shared his perspective in a recent interview. While clarifying he has never worked on GTA 6, Vogel commented on industry hearsay.
“If what I have been hearing about GTA 6’s features and gameplay is true, it could evolve into an MMORPG,” Vogel stated. He noted that many rumoured planned features are staples of the MMORPG genre.

Vogel’s comments align with observable actions by Rockstar Games. In August 2023, the company acquired FiveM, a popular modification framework for GTA V Online that enables custom roleplay (RP) servers.
Furthermore, Rockstar publicly confirmed its support for the Nopixel RP server team in September, stating a desire to help them “create the future of GTA RP.” These investments signal a strong commitment to deepening the social and persistent online experience.

Persistent online worlds, deep character progression, and strong social systems define MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. Integrating such elements could transform GTA Online from a session-based multiplayer mode into a living, evolving digital world.
The speculation has sparked intense debate within the fan community. While many are excited about the prospect, others are concerned about its potential impact on the franchise’s renowned single-player story.
