Following the remarkable success of the 2023 hit film “Barbie,” director Greta Gerwig is already moving forward with plans for a sequel “Barbie 2”. With the original film becoming a cultural phenomenon and achieving significant box-office success, expectations are high for the next instalment.

“Barbie” captivated audiences and impressed critics, securing a Fresh Certificate on Rotten Tomatoes with an 88% approval rating from over 500 media outlets and scoring 80 out of 100 on Metacritic.

The film achieved unprecedented financial success, earning $1.446 billion worldwide. This made it the highest-grossing film of 2023 and the most successful live-action comedy in history, surpassing “Home Alone” when adjusted for inflation.

Progress on “Barbie 2”

Greta Gerwig, alongside her husband and collaborator Noah Baumbach, spearheads the sequel’s development. They have reconvened the original film’s writing and production team and submitted an initial draft to Warner Bros. Although official confirmation from the studio is pending, the prospects for “Barbie 2” appear promising, given the first film’s performance.

The anticipation surrounding “Barbie 2” is immense, considering the original film’s role in redefining genre expectations and its financial achievements. The film’s ability to gross over ten times its production cost, which totalled around $600 million, including marketing and distribution, sets a high bar for its sequel.

With a proven track record and a strong team in place, “Barbie 2” is poised to be another standout cinematic event.
