Govt. contemplates placing senior MQM leaders on ECL

The government ‘may’ place the names of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders on the  Exit Control List (ECL) following disclosures of infamous death row convict Saulat Mirza.

MQM’s Saif Abbas, Wasay Jalil, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Waseem Akhtar, Babar Ghauri, Haider Abbas Rizwi, Faisal Sabzwari and Amir Khan may be put on ECL.

A notification will likely be issued after the federal interior ministry’s approval. The government’s ECL section has started working in this regard.

Ex-MQM worker Saulat Mirza managed to dodge his hanging for 72 hours and showed some of the ‘cards’ he had kept close to his chest.

“On the behest of party’s London-based leader Altaf Hussain, Senator Babar Ghouri ordered the four of us to gun down Shahid Hamid, the then managing director of the power utility, Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (K-Electric),” Mirza alleged in a rare statement issued from his death cell late yesterday night.

The ‘dead-man-talking’ also accused the Governor of Sindh, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad, of using his authority to have the criminals find a safe passage. However, in a late-night statement, the Governor House denied these accusations in the strongest words.
