Android users can now avoid scam calls with the help of Gemini Nano, Google’s smallest language model, which will detect suspicious calls.
During its I/O 2024 keynote, Google highlighted a significant intelligence upgrade for Gemini Nano. The enhanced model now helps users identify potential threats to personal information, such as social security numbers and bank account details.
In a live demonstration, an unknown caller attempted to deceive the recipient into transferring bank funds to a “safe” location. At this critical moment, Gemini Nano intervened, identifying the call as a likely scam and notifying the recipient that legitimate banks never request such actions.
Gemini Nano’s intervention can protect users who might otherwise follow the scam call instructions out of fear. According to WCCF Tech, this feature makes Gemini Nano an ideal companion for scam prevention.
However, while the program’s security is reassuring, it may also make some users uncomfortable knowing that an AI is listening to their calls. Fortunately, Gemini Nano runs locally on Android smartphones, keeping the data on the device.
Despite this, a WCCF Tech report notes that it’s uncertain if Google uses user data to improve its services, suggesting that Gemini Nano’s development might involve leveraging this information.
