On Thursday morning, the peaceful routine of Gilgit’s Baseen area was shattered by a horrific accident on the Gilgit-Ghizer Highway, claiming the lives of three schoolgirls and critically injuring another.
Gilgit Senior Superintendent of Police Zahoor Ahmed reported that the accident involved a Prado carrying schoolgirls, which tragically ran over four pedestrians on their way to school.
The local community and passersby responded heroically, rushing to aid the victims and transporting them to the Provincial Headquarters Hospital in Gilgit. The hospital’s officer-in-charge, Raja Amaldar Hussain, confirmed the severity of the situation. “The four girls were brought to the hospital in critical condition,” he stated. This accident is a grim reminder of a similar tragedy last year in the Ghanche district of Gilgit-Baltistan, where three children were killed under comparable circumstances. These repeated tragedies underline the urgent need for improved road safety measures to protect Gilgit’s youngest and most vulnerable residents.
