The Gilgit-Baltistan curfew and the deployment of the army have been ordered following a sharp deterioration in the law-and-order situation in the region.
Officials confirmed that authorities imposed a curfew and requested Pakistan Army deployment in Gilgit and Skardu after widespread protests erupted. The unrest followed reports of the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israel strike.
Several government and institutional buildings were set on fire during the protests. These included the offices of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in Gilgit and Skardu, a school, the office of the Superintendent of Police, and the Agha Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP).
Gilgit-Baltistan Curfew and Army Deployment
Deputy Home Secretary Ghulam Hasan issued a formal notification imposing a curfew for an initial period of three days, March 2, 3 and 4.
The notification stated that the move aims to prevent further incidents and protect human life and property, particularly in Gilgit and Skardu districts. Authorities expressed concern that the situation could deteriorate further without immediate action.
Inspector General of Police Gilgit-Baltistan, Akbar Nasir, confirmed that, alongside the army, police, Rangers, and Frontier Corps (FC), personnel will remain deployed on the streets.
The IGP clarified that the curfew will be relaxed only for funeral prayers and burials on humanitarian grounds.
However, only local residents of Gilgit will be permitted to attend the funeral and burial gatherings. Individuals travelling from other districts or cities will not be allowed to participate.
Citizens have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and avoid unnecessary movement during the curfew period. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as security forces work to restore order across the affected districts.
