The Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) has pledged its unwavering support to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) to secure the opposition leader’s position in the Sindh Assembly.
A meeting between Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori and GDA leader Pir Sadaruddin Shah Rashidi set the stage for this commitment. During the meeting, Rashidi extended his and Pir Pagaro’s cordial greetings to the Governor.
Governor Sindh relayed that Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, a prominent MQM-P figure, eagerly sought GDA’s backing for the coveted role in the Sindh Assembly.
MQM-P’s Path to the Opposition Leader’s Role in the Sindh Assembly
However, MQM-P faces a significant challenge in achieving this goal. Sindh Assembly officials have reportedly noted that MQM-P currently enjoys the support of merely 20 opposition members. The party would need the backing of an additional 12 members before it can stake a claim to the opposition leader’s position.
Amid the current deadlock with GDA, MQM-P has nominated Rana Ansar for the opposition leader’s role in the Sindh Assembly. Ansar’s ascension to the role would entail securing a specific number of votes to displace the incumbent opposition leader, Haleem Adil Sheikh, from PTI.
After lodging MQM-P’s application for the opposition office, Farooq Sattar voiced his concerns to journalists earlier. He criticized the current opposition leader for his conspicuous absence from the Sindh Assembly. Sattar claimed that neither the opposition leader nor his fellow lawmakers from his party had been actively participating in the sessions at the provincial assembly.
