Frozen has become the most commercially successful animated feature in history effectively becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever made.
The Disney feature has knocked previous record-breaker Toy Story 3, also a Disney/Pixar production, off the top spot.
Toy Story 3 grossed $1.063 billion in 2010, and Frozen reached $1.072 billion this weekend after opening in its final market, Japan.
The film was both a commercial and critical success, with praise given for it’s unorthodox and modern storyline.
Frozen is based on the Hans Christian Anderson tale The Snow Queen, and also stars Idina Menzel.
