Seven French families have initiated a legal battle against TikTok, claiming the platform exposed their teenage children to harmful content, resulting in tragic outcomes for two youths aged 15. Their attorney shared these details on Monday.
The legal complaint suggests TikTok’s algorithm made accessible videos that promote suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders to adolescents, attorney Laure Boutron-Marmion reported to franceinfo.
These families are collectively suing in the Créteil judicial court, marking Europe’s first case of this kind.
“The parents seek acknowledgement of TikTok’s legal responsibility,” Boutron-Marmion stated, highlighting that as a business, TikTok markets a product to consumers, including minors, and must thus account for any deficiencies.
Like its peers, TikTok has been scrutinized for content management on its platform.
It, along with Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta, is facing numerous U.S. lawsuits. These accuse them of luring and addicting countless children, adversely affecting their mental health.
TikTok’s response to the allegations was not immediately available.
The firm has acknowledged the significance of child mental health concerns. Earlier this year, CEO Shou Zi Chew informed U.S. legislators of the company’s commitment to safeguarding its young users.
