A Colorado Four Corners freeze watch warning has been issued as temperatures are expected to drop sharply overnight, putting plants and crops at risk across southwest Colorado.
The National Weather Service in Grand Junction warned that freezing conditions could affect several communities, including Durango, Cortez, and Pagosa Springs. Forecasters say overnight temperatures may drop to 27°F, well below freezing. The coldest air is expected after midnight, bringing a rapid frost across key areas.
Regions such as the Animas River Basin and San Juan River Basin are likely to experience the most intense frost conditions.
The sudden drop in temperature comes after weeks of unusually warm weather. As a result, many plants have already started early spring growth.
This makes them especially vulnerable. At temperatures around 27°F, frost can damage plant cells, turning healthy growth into wilted and discoloured vegetation within hours.
Farming communities in Cortez, Mancos, and Dove Creek are considered the most at risk. These areas sit in colder valley floors, where freezing air tends to settle more quickly.
Local farmers and gardeners are being urged to remain alert as conditions worsen overnight. Residents are advised to take steps to protect their plants and property. Covering outdoor plants with cloth or frost blankets can help reduce damage.
Additionally, bringing potted plants indoors and insulating exposed plumbing may prevent further issues. Watering plants before the freeze can also offer some protection.
