Authorities arrested Shahid Saleem Baig, the former Inspector General of Prisons, at his official residence in Lahore’s IG House.
Mirza Shahid Saleem Baig, who served in the role for five years, is under investigation alongside former deputy superintendent Zafar and Nazim Ali Shah, DIG prisons office superintendent for Rawalpindi. The probe centers on operations at Adiala Jail, particularly examining allegations of unauthorized access provided to PTI founder Imran Khan during his incarceration.
Baig, who retired prior to the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, had concluded his tenure in the prison department before the onset of these allegations. Recently, a former deputy superintendent of Adiala Jail was arrested for aiding Imran Khan. Additionally, Malik Mohammad Akram, a transferred deputy superintendent of Central Jail Rawalpindi, and two other officials were questioned.
In a significant move in 2022, the Punjab government prematurely retired Inspector General of Prisons Mirza Shahid Saleem Baig two months before his official retirement date. According to a notification by the Punjab Services & General Administration Department, Baig was scheduled to retire from government service on October 20, 2022, upon reaching the age of superannuation.
