Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Senator Hafiz Hamdullah has been booked for allegedly threatening and manhandling the renowned women rights activist and journalist Marvi Sirmed on a live television show.
The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at Kohsar police station in Islamabad.
Marvi in a Twitter message said “I’ve been informed by Islamabad Police that FIR has been registered against Sen Hamdullah on my application under sections 506 and 354,”
Marvi accused Hamdullah of abusing her with “worst possible expletives” during a TV programme regarding honor killings aired on June 10.
The disturbing incident caused outrage on social media, drawing condemnations from political leaders, journalists and rights defenders.
Among those who condemned the senator’s verbal assault were PTI Chairman Imran Khan and PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto and National Party leader Mir Hasil Bizenjo.
“Strongly condemn shameful abuse & attempted violence by JUIF Senator against @marvisirmed on TV talk show; & ensuing JUIF campaign against her,” Khan wrote on Twitter.
